I had a playlist of over 200 songs playing on my computer when Jose Gonzalez’s track entitled “Crosses” came on, that didn’t even matter to me because I was in the other room watching college football. But it was a little chilly in the apartment so I decided to go in my room and put on my socks. As I took the socks out of the drawer I dropped one of the socks and bent over to pick it up. Immediately as I did this, because of where my dresser is located, I had to bend over and face the window outside. The moment I bent over and looked out the window, these lyrics from the song started (I mean seriously… the moment I looked outside my window)
[song lyrics in bold]
The streets outside your window…
My window faces the road... ....overflooded...
And it was raining heavily... People staring, There was a car across the street and the driver was looking at me... They know you've been broken
I was feeling sad that Jane hadn’t contacted me in a week while she was in Prague,
and I was still trying to stay awake after 3 hours of sleep the night before (long story)
Repeatedly reminded by the looks on their faces
Ignore them tonight and you'll be alright
We'll cast some light and you'll be alright
The eerieness of the exact correlation of the music to that moment in my life was incredibly odd and interesting. The song clearly seemed to be speaking to me. But the song is really a great encouragement, I decided to then start the song over, I had to hear the whole thing… and the song begins,
Don't you know that I'll be around to guide you
Through your weakest moments to leave them behind you
Returning nightmares only shadows
We'll cast some light and you'll be alright
We'll cast some light and you'll be alright for now
Despite all the fun I had Friday night, I was feeling a bit lonely because Jane was gone and wasn’t talking to me, my parents were gone so I couldn’t go home, all of my roomates were gone so I had no one in the apartment, all my friends were gone because it was fall break. How can you feel sad or dejected after a moment like that? Needless to say I highly reccommend the 2003 release Veneer which includes Crosses on it, a truly great song.
The cover to Jose Gonzalez’s Veneer (2003)… check this album out
Hi, great tune. Has meant a lot to me as well… you should check out the Zero 7 album from this summer ‘The Garden’. It has a really awesome beefed-up version of crosses on it – also sung by Jose Gonzales.
The whole album is great too – and I saw them live last week. Truly stunning.
Dave.
