What am I doing on WordPress at 2:40 in the morning changing my theme? It’s kind of a long story… so you can read either the short story or the long story…

The Short Story:
I can’t sleep and this new theme was just added and its called “Unsleepable” so I thought, why not?

The Long Story:
Because I’m in student government at Charlotte and we are part of the UNC school system we have general assembly meetings of all 16 schools every so often. This weekend was also fall break and because everyone I knew was gone (as in parents, Jane, closest friends, roomates) I decided to go on my first ASG (The association of Student Governments) meeting which was held in Chapel Hill on the campus of UNC-Chapel Hill.

I arrived Friday and had a short meeting about elections where I was interviewed by the Daily Tarheel afterwards. That night we went to Ham’s on Franklin Street  to eat, while waitingor Jordan to get out of his meeting, and then we ran back to our hotel (it was a delegation of four) to change. We then left the hotel to go to a sorority mixer that Chris Matheson had been invited to from a friend in high school and we stayed at this bar until 2am and we met some great people and had a fun time. Then we ran around Franklin St. and ate some pizza and got back and went to sleep about 3…. I woke up @ 6 and couldn’t sleep because everyone’s phones started going off.

The ASG meeting on Saturday started at 9 so I got in the shower and ate my “continental breakfast”. After the meeting was over about 2:30pm I drove the 2.5 hours back to Charlotte with my new friend Edwin (it was only fair that I drove because he drove up) and I went back to my apartment. In my apartment I cooked dinner, watched Florida-LSU, and fell asleep about 7:30. Then I woke up @ 2 because I’d slept from 7:30pm to 2am… a full 8 hours. So then I decided, I can’t sleep and this new theme was just added and its called “Unsleepable” so I thought, why not?

I had a playlist of over 200 songs playing on my computer when Jose Gonzalez’s track entitled “Crosses” came on, that didn’t even matter to me because I was in the other room watching college football. But it was a little chilly in the apartment so I decided to go in my room and put on my socks. As I took the socks out of the drawer I dropped one of the socks and bent over to pick it up. Immediately as I did this, because of where my dresser is located, I had to bend over and face the window outside. The moment I bent over and looked out the window, these lyrics from the song started (I mean seriously… the moment I looked outside my window)

[song lyrics in bold]

The streets outside your window…

My window faces the road...

....overflooded...
And it was raining heavily...

People staring,

There was a car across the street and the driver was looking at me...

They know you've been broken

I was feeling sad that Jane hadn’t contacted me in a week while she was in Prague,

and I was still trying to stay awake after 3 hours of sleep the night before (long story)
Repeatedly reminded by the looks on their faces
Ignore them tonight and you'll be alright
We'll cast some light and you'll be alright

The eerieness of the exact correlation of the music to that moment in my life was incredibly odd and interesting. The song clearly seemed to be speaking to me. But the song is really a great encouragement, I decided to then start the song over, I had to hear the whole thing… and the song begins,

Don't you know that I'll be around to guide you
Through your weakest moments to leave them behind you
Returning nightmares only shadows
We'll cast some light and you'll be alright
We'll cast some light and you'll be alright for now

Despite all the fun I had Friday night, I was feeling a bit lonely because Jane was gone and wasn’t talking to me, my parents were gone so I couldn’t go home, all of my roomates were gone so I had no one in the apartment, all my friends were gone because it was fall break. How can you feel sad or dejected after a moment like that? Needless to say I highly reccommend the 2003 release Veneer which includes Crosses on it, a truly great song.

The cover to Jose Gonzalez’s Veneer (2003)… check this album out
